Wal-Mart Bans Bingo

It wasn’t the prices that brought all the customers to Wal-Mart. To some, it was the weekly bingo game. But, no more.

Wal-Mart’s recent decision to put a nationwide stop to the store’s popular in-store bingo games has many senior citizens upset.

Over the years, the free games became as much a part of Wal-Mart as the Wal-Mart greeter (the job I aspire to). Groups would meet in the store snack bars for weekly bingo games. Many store managers helped out by donating candy and other free merchandise as bingo prizes. The homegrown hospitality that Wal-Mart is famous for actually helped business.

The bingo games, unfortunately, got Wal-Mart into some hot water. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, for example wrote an article saying that the Wal-Mart bingo games were in violation of Pennsylvania state laws that prohibit even free bingo games.

Rather than hire attorneys to review a patchwork of state laws around the country, Wal-Mart has decided it is a more prudent business decision to simply ban bingo.

With all the problems in the world, it’s hard to believe that Wal-Mart bingo games are a big issue.
