Keno and Bingo-Differences and Similarities

Keno and bingo have many similarities. At many internet bingo sites keno is a very popular side game. Those unfamiliar with both games often confuse the two because of the similarities. Essentially keno is more like a lottery game. Keno is a highly entertaining grid game. The game of keno dates all the way back to ancient China. At the turn of the 19th century Keno was introduced into the United States by Chinese immigrants. Legend has it that Keno helped to finance the construction of the Great Wall of China.

Keno is a very simple game to play. In the modern version players pre select numbers from 1 through 80 on a card and insert the card into a computer system. A keno ticket is printed out displaying the card. A random number generator then selects the numbers. The object of keno is to match as many numbers as possible. Older versions of keno use ball machines similar to those found at bingo halls. The odds of winning any keno game become more difficult as more numbers are selected. Up to 20 numbers are selected in a keno game. The odds of getting all 20 numbers are about 1 in 3.5 quintillion.

Bingo also dates back quite a few centuries. The modern version of bingo evolved from a 15th century Italian lottery style game. Another old Italian game that has had an influence in the development of today’s 90 ball bingo games is the game called Tombola. Bingo games use preset cards with a 5 x 5  or a 9 x 3 grid. In traditional 75 ball bingo games the letters B-I-N-G-O are printed at the top of each column. The numbers are then slotted into each letter category such as B-10 or N-5. Card numbers can repeat and several winning patterns are possible in 75 ball games. Because of the grid used special patterns cannot be used in 90 ball bingo games.

One of the chief differences between bingo and keno games is that in keno games players select their numbers in advance and in bingo games players must wait for the numbers to be called so they can be matched to the numbers on the bingo card. Thanks to computer technology both games are widely available at internet bingo sites and casinos. Keno is one of the most popular side games at internet bingo sites. Both games can provide players with hours of entertainment and excitement.
