Bingo Association Names New Chairman

The Bingo Association is the well-known trade group representing licensed bingo operators in Great Britain. Currently 77 operators are members of the Bingo Association and some of the larger operators also have internet bingo sites. The Bingo Association is membership based and represents the interests of members to third parties including government regulators and legislators. The Bingo Association was formed in 1998 after the merger of the British Bingo Operators ‘Association and the Bingo Association of Great Britain. According to the Association’s website “Bingo is a unique part of the gambling industry, firmly at the soft end of the spectrum of gambling activities, rooted in the social arena.”

The Bingo Association regularly publishes documents of interest to licensed operators and the broader gambling sector. Published documents include reports, articles, consultations and executive summaries addressing a variety of bingo and gambling related topics. The Bingo Association’s website maintains an archive of news articles and reports and also contains a current news section. In recent years the Bingo Association has been instrumental in the fight against the high taxes paid by bingo operators. Currently bingo is the most highly taxed form of gambling in Great Britain.

On June 27th the Bingo Association announced the appointment of a new chairman. The new Bingo Association chairman is Mark Jones the current managing director of Mecca bingo. Mecca is one of the largest bingo operators in the UK and also maintains a popular internet bingo site. In 2009 Jones joined Rank Group as Managing Director of Mecca Bingo. Mecca is a long time member of the Association and is firmly committed to working with other operators for the benefit of the industry as a whole. Jones told reporters “I am delighted to have been appointed to the position of Chair of the Bingo Association. My primary focus will be to continue the Association’s campaign to secure a fairer tax deal for bingo and to continue to change people’s perceptions of the industry.”

The previous chairman of the Association, Brian Mattingley, was appointed in 2009. His expanded role at 888 Holdings is taking up an increasing amount of his time after he was named Chief Executive Officer in March of this year. Paul Talboys, Chief Executive of The Bingo Association stated “We are highly appreciative of Brian’s contribution to the work of the Association over the past three years and I have greatly enjoyed working with him. The industry faces a number of significant challenges, specifically in regard to securing a fair tax regime, against the backdrop of an ever changing leisure market. Mark’s experience in the leisure sector will be a great asset in helping the Association navigate the road ahead.”
